Man in his 20s and 40s arrested for insulting Gwangju and Jeonnam heavy rain victims as 'Hong-eo'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] A man in his 20s and 40s who insulted and mocked victims of heavy rain on an internet community site was caught by the police.
On the 14th, the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced that they have booked and are investigating two individuals, A (20) and B (40), on charges of defamation for writing posts mocking victims related to last month's heavy rain damage.
They are accused of disparaging victims by referring to a child who died in the heavy rain in Jeonnam region last month and the flooding damage at a memorial hall in Gwangju Metropolitan City using terms such as ‘hongeo’ and ‘misutgaru’.
According to the investigation, they committed the acts without any particular reason, aiming to attract attention from other users on the same site.
The Gwangju police stated that they will actively investigate and strictly punish not only malicious posts that insult the local community and provoke social outrage but also acts of spreading false information according to the law.
No Gwangil, head of the Cyber Investigation Unit at the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, said, “In addition to this case, we are conducting further investigations into those who wrote malicious posts related to the heavy rain damage. Although empathy and consolation for the victims should come first, we will strengthen continuous monitoring of malicious posts that cause significant secondary damage and intensify crackdowns on the authors of such posts, known as ‘malicious commenters.’”
