Suncheon-si Hyangdong, Elderly in 80s Donates 7.8 Million KRW in Cash to Vulnerable Groups and Senior Centers
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] In Hyangdong, Suncheon City, donations for neighborly love continue despite the difficult situation faced by all local residents due to COVID-19.
Hyangdong resident Jeong Young-im (female, 81 years old) donated 7.8 million KRW in cash, asking for it to be given to families in need. She has participated every year in donations to help those in difficulty with money earned from selling fruit on the street, which she started 30 years ago. This year, in particular, she made designated donations to 20 vulnerable households affected by COVID-19 and heavy rain-induced flood damage, as well as to senior centers.
Jeong Young-im said, “Having lived in Hyangdong for 61 years, I have seen truly needy neighbors in welfare blind spots who require help. I am very happy to be able to support those in greater economic need than my own children.” She added, “I hope that a culture of giving, practicing sharing because of me, will spread.”
