Assemblyman Seodongyong Seeks Win-Win Solutions for Baegunsan with Seoul National University President O Sejeong
Exploring Various Ways to Contribute to Local Communities Beyond Resolving the Nambu Academic Forest Issue
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Seo Dong-yong, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, and Gurye-eul), announced that he met with Oh Se-jeong, President of Seoul National University, the day before and requested active exploration of coexistence measures surrounding Baegunsan Mountain as well as various ways to contribute to the local community, including Gwangyang and Gurye.
Rep. Seo emphasized the value and significance of Baegunsan Mountain to residents, stating, “Baegunsan is an ecological treasure preserving over a thousand species of plants ranging from temperate to alpine zones and primeval forests, requiring systematic preservation and management. For local residents including those in Gwangyang and Gurye, it is a natural sanctuary and a prestigious mountain that enhances pride, and for residents who harvest gorosoe sap and forest products, it is their livelihood.”
On the other hand, Rep. Seo said, “Although the Southern Academic Forest’s inception and operation caused wounds to residents, I believe its academic value must be respected.” President Oh also agreed on the complex value and significance of Baegunsan Mountain.
Regarding this, Rep. Seo stated, “The issue of Baegunsan Southern Academic Forest is a matter that requires long-term consultations not only with Seoul National University but also with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Education, and others,” adding, “Seoul National University, which has benefited greatly from the academic forest for over 80 years, should fulfill its responsibilities as a partner by actively communicating with the local community. If a mediator role is needed to open the channel of this communication, I am willing to step forward as a member of the National Assembly.”

Furthermore, beyond simply resolving the long-standing ownership conflict, I hope Seoul National University actively explores various and new ways to contribute to the local community. Then, residents will open their hearts more, and everyone can find a mutually beneficial outcome.”
