Jeju Island Activates "Emergency Duty System" as Typhoon 'Haishen' Approaches North
On the 6th at 9 PM, Emergency Level 2 Activated... 13 Departments and Related Agencies Operate 24-Hour Collaboration System
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Chang-won] The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters announced that in response to the northward approach of Typhoon No. 10 ‘Haishen,’ it switched to Emergency Level 2 at 9 p.m. on the 6th to ensure thorough typhoon response.
As of 6 p.m. on the 6th, Typhoon No. 10 ‘Haishen’ has a central pressure of 945 hPa and a maximum wind speed near the center of 162 km/h (45 m/s). It is moving north-northwest at 32 km/h in the sea about 170 km south-southwest of Kagoshima, Japan.
The Korea Meteorological Administration issued a typhoon warning for the southern and eastern seas of Jeju at 9 p.m., and a typhoon advisory for the land of Jeju, the northern and western seas of Jeju, and the southwestern outer sea of the southern sea.
It is expected to approach Jeju in the early morning of the 7th.
As strong rain clouds flow in from the southern sea of Jeju, ‘Haishen’ is forecast to bring very heavy rain exceeding 300 mm mainly in mountainous areas and very strong winds with maximum instantaneous wind speeds of 100 to 150 km/h (25 to 40 m/s) from the night of the 6th to the early morning of the 7th.
The provincial Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters switched to Emergency Level 2 at 9 p.m. on the 6th to enable rapid on-site response in preparation for the typhoon warnings and began full-scale emergency duty operations.
With the upgrade to Emergency Level 2, 13 cooperating departments, including the Jeju Regional Aviation Administration, the Provincial Office of Education, Jeju Police Agency, Jeju Coast Guard, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and the 9th Marine Brigade, plan to begin emergency duty together.
Additionally, they plan to strengthen public awareness among residents using various media such as disaster text message services, local broadcasts, and disaster electronic signboards regarding the typhoon’s path and weather conditions.
Along with this, private organizations such as local autonomous disaster prevention groups are conducting inspections of flood control materials, and thorough safety measures are being taken, including △ maintenance of drainage to prevent road flooding △ patrol activities and installation of safety lines in low-lying areas, coastal areas, and around rivers.
The provincial Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters urges residents and tourists to frequently check weather conditions and familiarize themselves with typhoon action guidelines to minimize damage in the event of a typhoon.
