Samsung Electronics to Produce Next-Generation GPUs Following IBM and Nvidia
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Samsung Electronics will take over the production of the next-generation graphics processing units (GPUs) of the American graphics card company Nvidia, following IBM.
According to the semiconductor industry and foreign media on the 2nd, Nvidia announced on the 1st (local time) the launch of the next-generation GPU 'GeForce RTX 30' series and that the new products will be produced through Samsung Electronics' 8-nanometer foundry.
Nvidia has been producing semiconductors using Taiwan's TSMC process, but the newly introduced next-generation 'GeForce RTX 30' will utilize Samsung Electronics' 8-nanometer (nm) process.
Jensen Huang, Nvidia's CEO, showcased the GeForce RTX 3090, 3080, and 3070 chips at the online product launch event on the 2nd, explaining that "compared to previous models, it will improve video game graphics with more than twice the performance and nearly double the power efficiency."

Following last month’s agreement to outsource production of IBM's next-generation server central processing unit (CPU) 'Power10,' Samsung Electronics has secured Nvidia as an additional major client, which is evaluated as an opportunity to take a step forward in the foundry sector.
