[2020 Women's Lives] Sexual Violence Victims Doubled in 10 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Although the number of sexual violence crime victims in 2018 slightly decreased compared to the previous year, it still remained high. Compared to 10 years ago, it more than doubled.
According to the "2020 Women's Life in Statistics" report released on the 2nd by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and Statistics Korea, the number of sexual violence cases in 2018 was 31,396, a decrease of 838 cases compared to the previous year (32,234 cases). However, compared to 10 years ago in 2008 (15,426 cases), it more than doubled.
Among these, arrests reached about 30,000 cases, accounting for 95.7%. The number of people arrested was about 33,000, of which about 1,600 were detained, representing 5.0% of those arrested.
In 2018, the number of domestic violence offenders was 43,600, of which 9.2% were repeat offenders of the same type.
The number of domestic violence cases arrested was 41,905, and the number of people arrested was 43,576.
The number of repeat offenders among those arrested was 4,001, an increase of 44.2% compared to the previous year (2,775).
The number of victims of illegal filming in 2018 was 5,925, with women accounting for 82.9%.
The number of people arrested was 5,497, an increase of 60 compared to the previous year, and among them, men accounted for 96.6%, the majority.
As of 2018, safety perception regarding crime showed that women felt significantly more fear of crime than men.
The proportion of women who felt fear of crime was 57.0%, a decrease of 10.8 percentage points compared to 2010, but 12.5 percentage points higher than men (44.5%).
The perception that society is safe from crime increased by 6.3 percentage points for women and 11.8 percentage points for men compared to 2010, with men showing a greater increase.
