Dongwon Industries Establishes 'Eco-friendly Smart Land-based Salmon Farming Complex' in Yangyang County
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] Dongwon Industries is entering the "farming fishery" sector to secure stable and sustainable marine resources.
On the 31st, Dongwon Industries announced that it will establish an "eco-friendly smart land-based salmon farming complex" in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon Province. Dongwon Industries plans to invest approximately 200 billion KRW in about 35,000 pyeong of land in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon Province, to start construction of the land-based salmon farming complex within this year and begin phased operations from next year.
On the 1st of next month, Dongwon Industries will hold an investment agreement ceremony at the Gangwon Provincial Office to formalize this plan. The ceremony will be attended by Lee Myung-woo, CEO of Dongwon Industries, Choi Moon-soon, Governor of Gangwon Province, and Kim Jin-ha, Mayor of Yangyang-gun, among others.
Dongwon Industries plans to develop the domestic aquaculture industry, which has so far remained at a light industry level, into a heavy industry-level sector through large-scale facility investments and a land-based salmon farming complex based on cutting-edge new technologies.
The land-based salmon farming complex will be constructed as a state-of-the-art facility incorporating eco-friendly "seawater circulation" technology and smart construction methods based on the Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies.
The "seawater circulation" technology is an advanced eco-friendly land-based aquaculture technology secured through an investment agreement with Norway's land-based aquaculture company "Salmon Evolution" in July. Unlike conventional aquaculture methods that require periodic complete replacement of polluted seawater in the farming tanks, this technology replaces only 35% of the seawater while continuously circulating and reusing 65%, maintaining a stable aquaculture environment. Additionally, the replaced 35% of seawater is filtered to remove pollutants before being discharged, making it environmentally friendly.
Furthermore, IoT (Internet of Things), ICT, and big data technologies will be applied throughout the farming complex to maintain consistent aquaculture conditions such as water temperature and nutrient levels, and to enable real-time monitoring and control of the farming facilities.
Dongwon Industries aims to produce 20,000 tons of salmon annually through the land-based salmon farming complex and achieve annual sales of 200 billion KRW. The company also plans to establish a research and development (R&D) center and salmon processing facilities within the complex to unify all processes from production to manufacturing and distribution, directly managing the quality of the salmon. The salmon products produced will be exported to domestic and global markets via Yangyang Airport in the future.
The establishment of this land-based salmon farming complex is expected to contribute to regional economic revitalization by generating an import substitution effect of 200 billion KRW, a construction sector production inducement effect of 250 billion KRW, and creating about 400 new jobs in Yangyang-gun and the East Coast region.
