The center will be responsible for integrating and managing all data related to domestic railroad operations, with more than 150 personnel stationed on-site.
On the 26th, Chungnam Province announced that Governor Yang Seung-jo of Chungnam, Mayor Oh Se-hyun of Asan, and Son Byeong-seok, CEO of Korea Railroad (KORAIL), gathered at the Chungnam Provincial Office to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the construction of the new center.
According to the MOU, the center will be newly constructed and relocated by 2023 near KTX Cheonan-Asan Station in Jangjae-ri, Baebang-eup, Asan City.
The relocation aims to resolve the spatial limitations of the current center operating in Seoul and to respond quickly and flexibly to the Fourth Industrial Revolution by expanding digital transformation and enhancing safety.
The center building will be constructed on a 1,320㎡ site with a total floor area of 6,600㎡ and five above-ground floors. The main functions of the center include the integrated management and analysis of all railroad-related data such as ticket reservations, transportation cards, tourism, traffic information, logistics, and railroad facility IoT sensors through the establishment of a big data-based ‘Korea Railroad-type Data Dam’ system.
To this end, Korea Railroad plans to invest 37.5 billion KRW by June 2023, including 24.9 billion KRW for building construction and 12.6 billion KRW for system development and communication equipment installation.
After the center is established, more than 117 Korea Railroad employees, 26 control personnel, and over 10 partner company staff will be stationed and work there.
Along with the relocation, Korea Railroad will convert the currently operating Seoul center into a disaster recovery center to support the rapid resumption of public services in the event of disasters such as earthquakes or floods.
The province and city have agreed to provide administrative and financial support to ensure the smooth progress of Korea Railroad’s center construction and relocation project.
Governor Yang Seung-jo said, “The relocation of the center to Chungnam is a signal for the designation of Chungnam Innovation City and the relocation of public institutions as part of the Korean New Deal project promoted by the government. The province will strive to create effects in areas such as building smart infrastructure related to tourism and transportation in Chungnam and creating digital jobs for youth through this relocation.”
