View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae responded to criticism that her Facebook post in June, which raised suspicions of 'geom-eon-yuchak' (prosecutor-media collusion), generalized prosecutors by saying, "The prosecution must also reflect for reform," and retorted, "What is the problem?"
On the 25th, Minister Choo answered a question from Yoo Sang-beom, a member of the Future United Party, at the National Assembly Judiciary Committee, saying, "There were cases of wrongful investigative practices by prosecutors in the cognitive department," and responded accordingly.
In June, Minister Choo stated on Facebook, "The problem is geom-eon-yuchak," adding, "Prosecutors conduct planned investigations, summon detainees dozens or hundreds of times to coax and threaten them, fabricate evidence, and by publicizing the facts of the case to the media, create guilt before trial. We must boldly break away from these past practices."
Regarding this Facebook post, Representative Yoo asked, "Are prosecutors criminals?" to which Minister Choo replied, "There were times when they were. It cannot be said that there were none."
In response to Yoo's criticism that she generalized prosecutors, she said, "There were cases of wrongful investigative practices by prosecutors in the cognitive department, and even now, due to that, the Ministry of Justice is jointly operating a Human Rights Investigation Task Force (TF) to improve such coercive coaxing and threats." However, when asked if there were specific incidents of 'coercive coaxing and threats,' she replied, "Since it is under inspection, I will refrain from mentioning it."
Representative Yoo pointed out, "It is problematic that the minister publicly wrote such a post," to which Minister Choo responded, "The prosecution must also reflect on their faults. For reform," and retorted, "What is wrong with that post?"
