Gwangju Nam-gu, Dalmoe Saetteul Village 'Public Art Project' Promotion
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byeong-nae) announced on the 25th that it will publicly recruit artist teams to carry out a public art project worth 400 million KRW to provide job and creative activity opportunities to artists pushed to the brink by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Nam-gu, a large-scale public art project will take place from September this year to February next year in Dalmoe Saetteul Village, Wolsan-dong, where urban regeneration projects are underway.
The project aims to offer artists, who have suffered serious damage to their creative activities and livelihoods due to COVID-19, an opportunity to attempt new artistic works, and to create artworks reflecting neighborhood stories through communication between artists and local residents, transforming the village into a place where art and dignity breathe life.
Nam-gu plans to select artist teams through public recruitment to carry out the project, installing various works such as murals, sculptures, paintings, media art that capture the past, present, and future of Dalmoe Village, as well as street convenience facilities with artistic qualities.
Additionally, a community program involving residents will be operated to revitalize Dalmoe Village.
Eligibility for the public art project support requires forming a team of about 37 members, including a representative (planner) holding an official number certificate related to art and creation or a business registration certificate, as well as artists and administrative support personnel.
However, since this project is being implemented nationwide simultaneously, individual members can participate in only one project.
Application documents can be downloaded from the public notice section on the Nam-gu Office website, completed, and submitted either by visiting the 7th floor Culture and Tourism Department of the district office or by mail between the 27th and 31st of this month.
The results of the selection for the public art project executors will be announced next month.
Nam-gu plans to form a judging committee including external experts such as university professors to ensure fair evaluation, assessing the feasibility of the project plan, artistic quality, and benefits to local residents, and will finally select one team.
