Since 2004, when environmental organizations nationwide initiated a nationwide lights-off campaign to reduce the rate of electricity consumption increase, August 22 has been designated as Energy Day. On this day, a nationwide simultaneous 5-minute lights-off event (9:00 PM to 9:05 PM) and raising air conditioner temperature by 2 degrees Celsius (2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, 1 hour) are held simultaneously across the country.
This year’s Energy Day event in Mokpo, hosted by Mokpo YMCA, will be held under the theme “The 17th Energy Day, Turn Off the Lights and Turn On the Stars,” featuring diverse programs including 18 sharing market programs from 17 organizations, a starlight cultural festival, and the nationwide simultaneous 5-minute lights-off event, planned to engage citizens.

Professor Han Won-hee (Department of Marine Engineering Systems, College of Maritime Studies) of Mokpo National Maritime University (President Park Sung-hyun), who is organizing the 17th Energy Day event, stated, “To cope with abnormal climate phenomena such as heavy rain and heat waves, the most certain way is to reduce energy consumption and return to nature,” and urged, “Please actively participate in the nationwide simultaneous 5-minute lights-off and raising cooling temperature by 2 degrees events.”
