As mass infections continue nationwide following the August 15 rally in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, considering the incubation period of infections from the Gwanghwamun rally, this weekend is effectively a turning point for the second wave. With daily confirmed cases already fluctuating between 200 and 300, failure to enforce the weekend lockdown could lead to an uncontrollable catastrophe. In this crisis, health authorities earnestly appeal, "Do not go out and stay at home."
Sharp Increase from 50 to 257 Cases in One Week
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters on the 21st, the average daily confirmed cases over the past week were about 257. This is more than five times the previous week's average of around 50 cases per day. It far exceeds the government's criteria for applying the highest level 3 social distancing, which is based on new confirmed cases ranging from 100 to 200 or more.
Health authorities are preparing for the 'worst-case scenario.' They also consider it highly likely that the virus has already spread nationwide through rallies and other events. Kwon Jun-wook, Deputy Director of the Central Disease Control Headquarters, warned, "Following the Sarang Jeil Church, the August 15 rally seems to have acted as a catalyst for nationwide spread," adding, "If patient tracking remains sluggish until this weekend, we could enter the most severe situation like the United States or Europe at any time."

Seoul City is responding at about level 2.5, including banning gatherings of more than 10 people, which is one of the measures taken at level 3. However, since it takes about one to two weeks for these measures to show actual effects, immediate quarantine measures such as tracking confirmed cases and contacts have become crucial. Epidemiological investigations are being conducted on each infection cluster, including Sarang Jeil Church, to prevent further spread, while efforts are being made to identify rally participants and have them undergo diagnostic testing.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on the day, "The urgent task now is to quickly identify and isolate patients through diagnostic testing of all Sarang Jeil Church members, visitors, and rally participants," adding, "We will thoroughly protect personal information so that identities are not exposed during the testing process."
On the afternoon of the 15th, a rally condemning the Moon Jae-in administration, hosted by Sarangjeil Church and the Liberty Solidarity, is taking place in front of Dongwha Duty Free Shop in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
"Please Stay at Home" - Weekend at a Crossroads
The rapid increase in patients over a short period places a burden on the patient treatment system itself, so slowing the transmission speed is also a key focus for authorities. There are concerns about the medical system being strained due to the strike by medical residents starting from this day. Particularly, unlike previous outbreaks such as the Shincheonji Church or Itaewon club cluster infections, the recent trend shows a higher proportion of middle-aged and elderly patients, increasing the risk of fatalities if diagnosis or treatment is delayed.
According to health authorities, while 14.3% of patients in the Shincheonji cluster were aged 60 or older, the figure for Sarang Jeil Church is as high as 39.7%. A woman in her 70s from the Gyeonggi region, confirmed positive the previous day, died within a few hours before hospitalization. As of the previous day, the number of severe and critical patients was 18, an increase of 6 from the day before.
Experts believe that high-intensity social distancing is necessary, similar to the measures taken during the Shincheonji outbreak in Daegu and Gyeongbuk or in other countries experiencing large-scale outbreaks. Even if the government does not enforce mandatory measures, minimizing contact by voluntarily staying at home is currently the most effective quarantine method. If explosive spread occurs, there is a high possibility of raising social distancing to level 3, which essentially halts society as a whole, making it a difficult decision for authorities.
Professor Kim Woo-joo of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Korea University Guro Hospital said, "The government's request to limit outings to essential activities such as commuting, purchasing daily necessities, and hospital visits is akin to the Western 'Stay at Home Challenge' and is a necessary measure at this point," adding, "However, the effect will be limited if it lasts only for the weekend." Professor Lee Jae-gap of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital said, "It is important how much the public participates in refraining from unnecessary outings," emphasizing, "This should continue not only this weekend but until confirmed cases decrease."
