Hwang Jong-rye, Park Sung-won, and Jeon Mu-song Receive Korea National Academy of Arts Awards
Poet Oh Takbeon and Western-style painter Jeong Sanghwa join as new members
Ceramist Hwang Jong-rye (91), vocalist Park Sung-won (79), and actor Jeon Moo-song (79) will receive the National Academy of Arts Award of Korea.
The National Academy of Arts of Korea announced on the 20th that these three artists were selected as the 65th awardees. The National Academy of Arts Award has been given annually since 1955 to artists who have made remarkable contributions to the development of the arts through outstanding creative activities. The prize money is 100 million won.
Hwang Jong-rye is a master ceramist who founded the Department of Craft Arts at Kookmin University. Since 1972, she has operated the Hwang Jong-rye Ceramics Research Institute, continuing the tradition of Korean ceramics. She has achieved many accomplishments, including restoring the traditional technique "Gwiyalmun," which had been lost for a time, and has received honors such as the Order of Cultural Merit, Jade Crown (1993) and the Myungwoncha Academic Award (2009).
Park Sung-won is a veteran tenor vocalist. He studied vocal music at Seoul National University and the Santa Cecilia National Academy of Music in Rome. Known for his high vocal range and illuminating various stages, he has received awards such as the Performer of the Year Award (1988), the Cultural Merit Award (1993), and the Korean Music Association Special Award (2013). He has also worked as a professor at Keimyung University, Sangmyung University, and Yonsei University, dedicating himself to nurturing future talents.
Jeon Moo-song graduated from the Department of Theater at Seoul Institute of the Arts and is a veteran actor who has been active across theater, film, and drama. He became widely known to the public for his passionate performance as Monk Jisan in the 1981 film "Mandala." He won the Best New Actor Award at the Grand Bell Awards for this role. While appearing in films and dramas, he has also maintained his presence on the theater stage, leading the revival of theater.

Meanwhile, the Academy elected new members this year: poet and novelist Oh Tak-beon (77), monochrome painting master and Western painter Jung Sang-hwa (88), calligrapher Kwon Chang-yoon (77), famous for the Korean national seal, veteran architect Yoon Seung-jung (83), and pianist and medical doctor Jeong Jin-woo (92). With this, the total number of Academy members has increased to ninety-one.
