Seongnam Mayor Eun Su-mi Attends Memorial Ceremony for Japanese Military Comfort Women Victims Day
[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Eun Soo-mi, mayor of Seongnam City, attended a memorial ceremony held on the morning of the 14th in front of the Statue of Peace at Seongnam City Hall Plaza to commemorate the Japanese military comfort women victims' Memorial Day.
Mayor Eun paid tribute to the grandmothers who were victims of the Japanese military comfort women by laying flowers and observing a moment of silence in front of the Statue of Peace. In her memorial speech, she said, "During these difficult times of COVID-19 and heavy rains, I will draw courage from the spirit of the grandmothers to fulfill the duty of protecting the lives and safety of citizens under any circumstances," and promised, "We will not forget or lose the courage of the grandmothers on that day. We will strive even harder for human rights and democracy."
Memorial Day marks August 14, 1991, when the late grandmother Kim Hak-soon (1924?1997) first publicly testified about being a victim of the Japanese military comfort women. Since 2018, the government has designated this day as a national memorial day.
