A Living Dog Among Stray Dog Corpses... Suspected Illegal Euthanasia
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Allegations have been raised that around 90 dogs were illegally euthanized at an animal shelter in Boseong, Jeollanam-do.
The animal protection organization Beagle Rescue Network (hereinafter BGN) posted on Instagram on the 10th, stating, "Upon receiving news that euthanasia was scheduled at the Boseong-gun shelter, we raided the site to verify the euthanasia process and witnessed a horrific scene," along with a video.
In the video, when they overturned one of two sacks, a dog still alive and moving was found among the corpses.
The organization said, "The veterinarian was nowhere to be seen, and a bulldozer was waiting to load the dog corpses," adding, "The truck already had euthanized corpses loaded in sacks, but among them was a dog still breathing."
They further added, "Some of the dogs had blood clotted, and their bodies were soiled with feces, possibly from having defecated."
BGN stated, "A shelter official present at the scene made strange remarks such as saying the dogs would die if placed in sacks without euthanasia drugs, raising many suspicions," and reported that the police are currently investigating the situation.
Meanwhile, the Boseong Animal Shelter, opened in February 2018, is a facility established by Boseong-gun to manage abandoned dogs and is operated by a private individual under consignment.
BGN criticized the fact that euthanasia was performed in front of other dogs, that no anesthetics were used, and that there was no proper confirmation of complete death after drug administration.
According to Article 8 of the Animal Protection Act, "Prohibition of Animal Cruelty," it is forbidden to kill animals in public places or in front of animals of the same species.

Additionally, according to the animal protection center operation guidelines, when a veterinarian euthanizes an animal, the process must sequentially include anesthesia first, followed by the use of drugs that induce cardiac arrest and respiratory paralysis, or intravenous injection of anesthetics.
