Police Forward Ambulance Driver Who Struggled with Taxi Driver Obstructing Traffic with a Non-Prosecution Opinion
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The police investigating an ambulance driver who was accused of assault after an altercation with a taxi driver have sent the case to the prosecution with a recommendation for non-prosecution.
According to the police on the 11th, the Gangdong Police Station in Seoul forwarded the case on the 29th of last month to the prosecution with a non-prosecution opinion regarding taxi driver Choi Mo, who had accused ambulance driver A of assault.
The police judged that the ambulance driver could be exempt from legal responsibility due to justifiable reasons such as self-defense, self-help, or public interest.
Earlier, on June 8th in the afternoon, on a road in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, Choi had a minor collision with a private ambulance driven by A and blocked the way for about 10 minutes, saying, "Handle the accident first. If the patient dies, I will take responsibility."
At that time, A pleaded, "I have an emergency patient on board, please clear the way," and had a brief altercation with Choi. Choi filed a complaint accusing A of pulling him out and pushing him.
Inside the ambulance driven by A was a 79-year-old patient with stage 4 lung cancer who was experiencing breathing difficulties. The patient was transported to the hospital by another 119 ambulance. About five hours after the accident, around 9 p.m. that day, the lung cancer patient passed away.
The deceased patient's son posted a petition on the Blue House National Petition Board in early last month requesting punishment for the taxi driver, which initiated the investigation into the taxi driver.
