Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 11th that it plans to quickly distribute the second round of Jeju-type emergency disaster relief funds starting from the application reception on the 24th, before Chuseok (October 1st).
The recipients are households registered in the resident registration as of the 29th of last month, and the funds will be provided to all residents and registered foreigners regardless of household income or the occupation of household members.
The total number of recipients is 699,256, combining 671,768 residents and 27,488 registered foreigners.
Unlike the first round of support, which provided up to 500,000 KRW depending on the number of household members, the second round will provide 100,000 KRW per person in cash. The first round excluded basic livelihood security recipients, public officials, and financial industry workers, and was given to households with income below 100% of the median income, but the second round includes all of them.
Hyundai-seong, Director of Planning and Coordination at Jeju Province, said, “A survey of residents showed that 65% prefer cash, and the nationwide prepaid card format implemented by the government is unsuitable for elderly people in rural areas with weak commercial districts. Although cash may cause issues such as being shared with children, we decided to provide cash because we believe it will help the local economy if used in households before Chuseok.”
The support funds will be deposited into the head of household’s account according to the number of household members upon application. Cohabitants can apply separately to have the funds deposited into their own accounts.
To prevent inconvenience expected from the surge in applications due to social distancing and the payment to all residents, a 5-day rotation system based on the last digit of the head of household’s birth year will be applied for the second round of applications.
From the application start date on the 24th until the 6th of next month, only online applications following the 5-day rotation system will be accepted. From the 7th, both online applications and in-person applications at the resident centers in the jurisdiction of the registered address will be accepted simultaneously.
During the third week, until the 11th of next month, the 5-day rotation system will be applied to both in-person and online applications. From the 14th, the 5-day rotation system will be lifted. On weekends and holidays, online applications are possible regardless of the rotation system, and anyone can apply.
Jeju Province plans to complete the second round of applications by the 27th of next month and focus administrative efforts to ensure payments are made before Chuseok to stimulate the local economy through increased consumption.
