Gwangju Dong-gu to Conduct Intensive Supervision and Crackdown on No-Smoking Zones Until the 31st
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 6th that it will conduct intensive guidance and crackdowns on non-smoking areas, including areas with frequent complaints.
The intensive crackdown, which will be carried out until the 31st, plans to have six non-smoking instructors divided into three teams conduct inspections not only during the day but also at night and on holidays for 4,571 designated non-smoking areas within the district.
This crackdown will focus on smoking violations within non-smoking areas including public offices, urban parks, bus stops, and complaint-prone areas such as PC rooms, medical institutions, and the National Asian Culture Complex.
Additionally, inspections will be conducted on violations related to compliance with non-smoking facility standards, such as the status of facility standards implementation and adherence to smoking room installation criteria.
Currently, under the “National Health Promotion Act,” fines for non-smoking areas designated in public facilities and daycare centers/kindergartens are 100,000 KRW, while fines for non-smoking areas such as urban parks and bus stops designated by the “Ordinance on Creating a Non-Smoking Environment and Preventing Secondhand Smoke Damage in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City” are 20,000 KRW.

Mayor Im Taek of Dong-gu said, “As smokers have recently been classified as a high-risk group with a high risk of infection amid the spread of COVID-19, smoking cessation for health is more necessary than ever,” adding, “We will reduce secondhand smoke damage and establish a non-smoking culture through continuous guidance, crackdowns, and non-smoking campaigns.”
