Hapcheon 75th Anniversary Korean Atomic Bomb Victims Memorial Ceremony Held

View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] On the 6th, the 75th anniversary memorial rite for atomic bomb victims was held at the Memorial Tower inside the Hapcheon Atomic Bomb Welfare Center in Hapcheon County, Gyeongnam, organized by the Hapcheon branch of the Korea Atomic Bomb Victims Association.
The memorial rite was held to honor the sacrifice of 100,000 Korean atomic bomb victims among those affected by the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, on August 6 and 9, 1945, to raise awareness that there are Korean atomic bomb victims, and to heal the physical and mental suffering they have endured.
At the memorial rite, only a minimal number of attendees participated to honor the victims, including Moon Jun-hee, Mayor of Hapcheon County; Bae Mong-hee, Chairman of the Hapcheon County Council; Kim Yoon-chul, Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Assembly member; Choi Chi-hyun, Administrative Officer of the Blue House Office of Civil Society; Song Jun-heon, Director of Disease Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare; Shin Jong-woo, Director of the Gyeongsangnam-do Health and Welfare Bureau; government officials; executives of the Atomic Bomb Victims Association; and Ha Jae-sung, Director of the Korea Atomic Bomb Victims Welfare Center.
Mayor Moon Jun-hee of Hapcheon County said, “We are striving to alleviate the emotional burdens of the first-generation atomic bomb victims and to promote the rights and interests of the second and third generations,” adding, “We will continue to provide support for the healing and rehabilitation of those wounded by the atomic bomb.”
Meanwhile, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the memorial ceremony was omitted, and only the general rite was conducted, with the number of participants significantly reduced compared to previous years.
