Intellectual Humor on Life, Literature, and History, Play 'History Boys' Opens in September
Doosan Art Center Performances Until November 8
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The play "The History Boys" will open on September 19 at Doosan Art Center Yeon-gang Hall.
"The History Boys" is a representative work by British actor and playwright Alan Bennett. Set in a British public high school in the 1980s, it depicts the relationships between eight students preparing for university entrance exams and their teachers. The play won three awards at the 2005 Laurence Olivier Awards in the UK and six awards at the 2006 Tony Awards in the US, gaining worldwide recognition for its artistic merit. In Korea, it has been consistently loved by audiences since its premiere in 2013 and won the "Best Play" award at the 2014 Korea Theater Awards.
O Dae-seok and Jo Young-gyu play Hector, the literature teacher who pursues studying for life. Park Jung-bok newly joins as Irwin, the temporary teacher struggling to get students into Oxbridge. Also, Ahn Jae-young, who played Scripps last season, returns this time as Irwin to meet the audience anew. Yang So-min and Lee Ji-hyun play Lintott, who is straightforward but always worries about the students, and Kyeon Min-sung is cast as the Principal, who is solely interested in raising the school's level by sending many students to prestigious universities.
Lee Jae-gyun, Kim Ri-hyun, and Hwang Soon-jong play Posner, who has a shy personality and youthful appearance. Lee Hae-jun and Choi Jung-woo appear as Dakin, who is handsome, charming, and confident in every way. Hyun Seok-jun and Kim Hyo-sung portray Scripps, the dependable friend who listens well to others. Oh Jung-taek and Shim Soo-young are cast as Rudge, who likes sports.
Kang Eun-bin plays Lockwood, who is assertive and smart; Hong Jun-gi plays Akthar, the Muslim boy; Choi Jung-wook plays Timms, the mischievous prankster; Hwang Jung-min plays Crowther, who is interested in theater but not in literature class; and Yoon Geon-woo is cast as the understudy.
