Doosan Heavy Industries Restructuring Business, Advancing Aerospace and Eco-Friendly Sectors
Entry into 3D Printing Aerospace Parts Business
Strengthening Large Gas Turbine and Offshore Wind Power Businesses
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is accelerating the restructuring of its business portfolio through eco-friendly energy and new businesses instead of coal-fired power and nuclear power.
According to the industry on the 2nd, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction will enter the aerospace parts business through 3D printing technology within this year. The goal is to achieve sales of more than 200 billion KRW in related businesses within five years.
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction recently obtained the aerospace quality management system AS9100 certification, which is essential for entering the aviation industry. AS9100 is an international standard established by the International Aerospace Quality Group, reflecting safety, reliability, and special requirements demanded in the global aerospace sector.
The company received certification in the development and manufacturing of 3D printing for the aerospace, space, and defense industries. 3D printing allows for complex designs and has the advantage of reducing manufacturing costs and production time. The company plans to start bidding on small-scale products as early as this year.
Since 2014, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has introduced 3D printing technology and invested about 20 billion KRW to build a dedicated manufacturing plant at its headquarters in Changwon. Currently, it is producing gas turbine parts through 3D printing.
The company is also in the final stages of prototype testing to target the market for the ‘Korean-type power generation gas turbine,’ independently developed as the world’s fifth. If it passes various tests currently underway at the Changwon plant, the gas turbines will be delivered to the Gimpo combined heat and power plant. Previously, in December last year, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction signed a gas turbine supply contract with Korea Western Power for the Gimpo combined heat and power plant, securing an opportunity to demonstrate large gas turbines for power generation.

It is also strengthening its offshore wind power business. Since winning its first offshore wind turbine order in Sinan in 2010, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has recorded cumulative orders worth 660 billion KRW to date. The company has a track record of supplying wind turbines with a capacity of about 240 MW. The company is preparing for the 14 trillion KRW Southwest offshore wind power project to be constructed offshore from Gochang County to Buan County, Jeollabuk-do, by 2029, as planned by the government.
