According to CNN on the 30th (local time), in July 2018, in an apartment in Moscow, Russia, then-teenage sisters Kristina Kachaturian (then 19), and her two younger sisters Angelina (then 18) and Maria (then 17) were charged with killing their father Mikhail.
On the day of the incident, Mikhail lined up the three sisters because the house was messy and sprayed pepper spray in their faces. Kristina, the eldest who suffered from asthma, fainted, according to Russian police and the sisters' lawyer.
That night, the three sisters decided to kill their father. When he fell asleep, they used his pepper spray, a hammer, and a knife to attack him.
Mikhail's body was found on the stairs within the apartment complex with dozens of stab wounds to his chest and neck.
The sisters tried to make it look like their father attacked first by injuring themselves with a knife and calling the police and ambulance. However, they reportedly confessed to the killing during interrogation.
However, the sisters testified that they had suffered sexual, physical, and emotional abuse from their father for years.
Mikhail's cellphone contained text messages threatening to sexually assault and kill the sisters and their mother.
In April 2018, Mikhail sent a message saying, "You are a prostitute and will die as a prostitute," and "I will beat you down completely and kill you," because his daughter had sexual relations with her boyfriend.
Domestic violence experts and women's organizations have defended the three sisters, stating that having endured long-term abuse without legal or institutional protection, their only choices were to defend themselves or die at their father's hands.
The sisters' lawyer, Aleksei Pashin, argued, "We believe they had no other choice. Their father drove them to despair, and their lives were a constant hell. They should not be treated like healthy and rational people. They suffered from serious mental illnesses, including battered woman syndrome and post-traumatic stress disorder."
