[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] On the 30th, Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae targeted Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji), claiming that "religious organizations have joined forces (against prosecutorial reform)."
Minister Choo said in a post on her Facebook that "while indiscriminate and baseless attacks from the media and the (Future) United Party against me are intensifying day by day, now even Shincheonji has reached the point of attacking me."
She continued, "I am facing relentless resistance and attacks from conservative media and the United Party opposing prosecutorial reform," adding, "Since policy criticism is not effective, they have shamelessly resorted to attacking my family and now even my personal information."
Along with this, Minister Choo cited media reports that Shincheonji held a meeting to 'join the petition for Minister Choo's impeachment' and the delivery of mail containing claims that 'the oppression of Shincheonji is unjust' to the Ministry of Justice as evidence.
Earlier, in February, Minister Choo had instructed the prosecution to respond strongly with forced investigations such as raids against Shincheonji's illegal acts, including obstruction of epidemiological investigations. Lee Man-hee (89), the founder of Shincheonji, had an arrest warrant requested on the 28th on charges including violation of the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act.
Minister Choo claimed, "In fact, after Lee Man-hee was questioned by the prosecution, an unusually large amount of mail began arriving at the Ministry of Justice Minister's Secretariat."
Emails claiming that the Korean government is oppressing Shincheonji have been delivered not only to the Ministry of Justice but also daily to many parliamentary aides and numerous reporters recently.
