[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] India has surpassed Russia to become the third country in the world with the highest number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection.
According to the international statistics site Worldometer on the 6th, India reported 23,932 new COVID-19 cases the previous day, bringing the total confirmed cases to 697,836, making it the third country in the world with the most COVID-19 cases. Russia reported 6,736 new cases on the same day, with a total of 681,251 confirmed cases.
India had implemented strict lockdown measures, including travel restrictions, in March this year, keeping new COVID-19 cases around 1,000. However, after lifting the lockdown last month due to economic reasons, the spread of COVID-19 accelerated rapidly.

Besides the U.S., Brazil, India, and Russia, other countries recently reporting a high number of new COVID-19 cases include South Africa (8,773 new cases) and Mexico (6,914 new cases).
