Government Evaluates Public and Professional Aspects of 91 Museums and Art Galleries
Written Evaluation and On-site Inspection Based on the 'Museum and Art Gallery Promotion Act'
Issuance of 2-Year Certification to Institutions with Excellent Scores
The government will implement an evaluation and certification system to improve the quality of national museums and public art museums.
On the 6th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that it will evaluate the public nature and professionalism of 36 national museums and 55 public art museums based on the "Museum and Art Gallery Promotion Act." These institutions have been registered as national or public and have been in operation for more than three years. From next month until November, they will undergo document evaluations and on-site inspections. The Ministry will announce the final results in December. Museums and art galleries that receive excellent scores will be issued a two-year certification.
The evaluation criteria are divided into five categories according to the enforcement decree of the "Museum and Art Gallery Promotion Act": ▲achievement of establishment objectives ▲appropriateness of organization, personnel, facilities, and financial management ▲thoroughness of collection and management of materials ▲performance in hosting exhibitions and conducting educational programs ▲public responsibility. Choi Hwan, a researcher at the Ministry’s Culture and Arts Policy Office, said, “The detailed indicators, about 31 in total, were developed through pilot operations of evaluation and certification for national museums and public art museums until last year. We plan to supplement them this year by reflecting opinions from the project briefing session and the evaluation and certification review committee.”
Based on the evaluation and certification results, the Ministry plans to establish a virtuous cycle by strengthening rewards for excellent institutions, such as awarding public officials belonging to outstanding institutions, publishing collections of best operational cases, and supporting public relations. Additionally, it will promote the sharing and dissemination of exemplary cases, provide consultations for uncertified institutions, and hold training sessions on evaluation results.
