Construction of an Open-Type Senior Center Complex in Sangdo 4-dong, Dongjak-gu
Construction aiming for opening in January next year... Creating a welfare and cultural space accessible to all residents with a total floor area of 627.96㎡, including a district senior center, shared resident spaces, and a Kiwoom Center
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Changwoo Lee) is actively promoting the construction of the ‘Sangdo 4-dong Open Senior Center Complex’ to expand welfare and cultural infrastructure that meets the needs of local residents.
The open senior center is a new concept of an intergenerational community space where the senior center space is shared so that any resident can enjoy conveniences in various fields such as education and culture. Starting with the Sadang 5-dong senior center in 2015, the number has expanded annually, and currently, 34 centers are in operation.
First, after deciding to build a new Sangdo 4-dong community center, the district decided in 2018 to remodel the old Sangdo 4-dong community center (53 Seongdaero 29-gil) into a complex facility equipped with an open senior center and a Kiwoom Center.
Subsequently, the Sangdo 4-dong Urban Regeneration Residents’ Council discussed ways to utilize the old Sangdo 4-dong community center, and based on this, conducted research and planning last year.
The district completed the detailed design service last month and plans to start remodeling the open senior center this month with a project budget of about 1.4 billion KRW, aiming to open it to residents in January next year.
The facility will be three stories above ground with a total floor area of 627.96㎡, featuring ▲1st floor: district-run senior center and multipurpose meeting rooms as shared spaces for residents ▲2nd floor: education program rooms for yoga and singing classes, an auditorium, and offices.
Notably, the 3rd floor will house the Kiwoom Center, which supports public childcare services for about 30 general children, contributing to the healthy growth of children and reducing the childcare burden on parents.
Additionally, the district is establishing a Senior Job Center to create quality jobs for seniors and encourage active social participation, which began operation this month.
The Senior Happiness Corporation, a senior job specialized company established with capital investment from local governments nationwide for the first time, will have activity spaces, education rooms for seniors, shared workshops, and community rooms. It will provide ▲discovery and employment linkage of senior-specialized jobs ▲job counseling and basic competency education ▲customized training for various occupations.
Lee Sunhee, Director of the Senior and Disabled Division, said, “Through this project, we will create an intergenerational space that various groups of residents, from seniors to children, can use and enjoy, and provide welfare and cultural services.”
