Ministry of Environment Supports Vulnerable Groups Against Summer Heatwaves
Public-Private Joint 'SOS Climate Action Public Service Campaign' Launched
Distribution of Various Heatwave Response Supplies...Guidance on Action Measures Provided
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The Ministry of Environment announced on the 3rd that it will launch the 'SOS Climate Action Public Interest Campaign' containing support measures for vulnerable groups to prepare for summer heatwaves.
First, it will actively implement projects to prevent heatwave damage and support vulnerable groups to safely get through the summer.
The Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, together with civic groups and companies, will provide heatwave response supplies such as bottled water, cool mats, arm sleeves, and towels to 2,000 vulnerable households including basic livelihood security recipients and elderly living alone in 53 cities and counties nationwide, and will guide them on action guidelines.
The heatwave action guidelines include ▲ resting during the hottest hours ▲ wearing cool clothing (Cool Maepsi) and using parasols ▲ drinking water frequently ▲ preventing food poisoning ▲ checking on the health of people around you.
Greenhouse gas diagnosis counselors will deliver supplies to vulnerable households and provide guidance on action guidelines using non-face-to-face methods such as phone calls.
Additionally, 220 locations such as local children's centers will be equipped with window-type air conditioners, and cool roofs will be installed on the rooftops of 266 buildings. Customized adaptation measures will be supported for a total of 2,492 households or facilities in 74 local governments nationwide.
Since 2009, the Ministry of Environment has been conducting climate change public interest activities with the Korea Climate and Environment Network, the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, and companies every year to raise awareness of the seriousness of climate change and lead climate action.
This summer, the campaign will be carried out in partnership with companies in the ice cream, distribution, bottled water, and clothing industries. Participating companies include Binggrae (ice cream), BGF Retail (CU convenience stores), E-Mart, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporation (Samdasoo), and Hyungji I&C (clothing).
For example, energy-saving and low-carbon lifestyle practices will be promoted on the packaging of ice cream products that are easily accessible to the public. Over 5,000 CU convenience store locations nationwide will operate heatwave shelters and promote low-carbon lifestyle practices.
The Ministry of Environment will produce and distribute infographic and promotional content and will also promote various online events where the public can participate in practicing low-carbon lifestyles.
