Democratic Labor Union Member Accuses Kim Hyung, Daewoo Construction President
Request for Investigation into Assault and Hit-and-Run Allegations Involving Daewoo E&C Officials
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] A member of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) has filed a complaint with the police against Kim Hyung, president of Daewoo Construction.
The Gangnam Police Station in Seoul announced on the 2nd that it has received a complaint from Mr. A, a member of the KCTU’s National Construction Workers' Union Gyeonggi Construction Machinery Branch, requesting an investigation into allegations of assault and hit-and-run by Kim and other Daewoo Construction officials against fellow union member Mr. B, and is currently investigating the case.
According to Mr. A, Mr. B participated in a protest against Daewoo Construction along with three other union members at an apartment complex in Gangnam-gu, where President Kim resides, around 7:20 a.m. that day. The union branch had been protesting there since the 29th of last month, demanding Daewoo Construction resolve the unpaid construction machinery rental fees amounting to 600 million won.
Mr. A claimed, "When Mr. B approached President Kim, who was on his way to work, attempting to initiate a conversation, eight men nearby rushed out and pushed him. The car carrying President Kim struck Mr. B’s knee, who was blocking the way, and then left the scene."
Mr. B was transported to a nearby hospital by the 119 emergency medical team that arrived on the scene. The injuries are reported to be not serious.
