Korea Integrated Technology Achieves World's First Commercialization of Leachate Recirculation Facility
Leachate Recirculation via Proprietary Bioreactor Method
Expectations for Odor and Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction
Securing Foundation for Entry into Over 200 Domestic Landfills and Global Markets
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] Korea Engineering Consultants Corp., a comprehensive engineering company, announced on the 2nd that it has successfully installed a leachate recirculation facility at the Sudogwon Landfill Site by applying its proprietary bioreactor method and has commenced commercial operation. This is the world's first case of commercializing the bioreactor method.
The facility includes an upper supply system consisting of eight units such as a 284 km long double pipeline that simultaneously performs leachate injection and gas collection, two leachate storage tanks, two lower supply facilities, and pumps for the recirculation water supply system.
Korea Engineering Consultants applied its independently developed bioreactor method. This technology recirculates leachate generated at waste landfills back into the landfill, allowing the reuse of leachate to prevent environmental pollution. It is expected to reduce the unique odors, dust, and leachate of the landfill.
Through the facility installation, Korea Engineering Consultants anticipates multiple direct and indirect effects including ▲annual leachate treatment cost reduction of approximately 11.7 billion KRW ▲annual post-management cost reduction of approximately 100 billion KRW ▲improvement of surrounding water quality environment through zero leachate discharge ▲improvement of surrounding air quality by reducing landfill gas surface emissions.
Kim Young-gyu, site manager at Korea Engineering Consultants responsible for the commercial operation of the leachate recirculation facility, said, "This is the fruit of more than ten years of effort to develop and commercialize bioreactor technology," adding, "It will prove the excellence of eco-friendly landfill construction technology."
