The World's Best Ramen 'Nongshim Shin Ramyun Black' Selected by The New York Times
The Perfect Combination of Rich Broth, Hearty Ingredients, and Chewy Noodles
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] “I couldn’t stop eating Shin Ramyun Black!”
The New York Times, one of the three major daily newspapers in the United States, named Nongshim’s Shin Ramyun Black as the most delicious ramen in the world. According to Nongshim on the 2nd, in the article “The best instant noodles” published on the New York Times’ product review site Wirecutter, Shin Ramyun Black proudly took first place among the top 11 ramen selected by journalists and experts worldwide. Shin Ramyun Black received high marks for its distinctive rich broth and chewy noodles.
The New York Times introduced Shin Ramyun Black as “a premium version of Korea’s number one Shin Ramyun,” praising its rich beef broth with added seolleongtang seasoning, balanced spiciness, sliced garlic, large mushroom pieces, and the excellent texture combination provided by the chewy noodles. (It has a winning combination of a complex, spicy broth, substantial dehydrated vegetables, and toothsome noodles. The Shin Black noodles are a premium version of NongShim’s popular Shin Ramyun and they contain an additional “sul-long-tang” seasoning packet.)
This evaluation was conducted by the New York Times Wirecutter team, who received recommendations for the best ramen from seven food experts including chefs, writers, and critics. They then tasted and scored the final 11 selected ramen to determine the rankings. Among the best 11 ramen chosen, there were 4 Korean ramen, 6 Japanese ramen, and 1 Singaporean ramen.
Anna, the reporter who wrote the article, said, “Out of thousands of ramen worldwide, we grouped the ramen selected by experts from various fields by taste type and conducted tasting tests over several days. For fair results, all products were prepared according to the standard cooking instructions on the packaging. We comprehensively considered taste, quality, and advertising authenticity.”
In addition, following Shin Ramyun Black, Nongshim’s Chapaguri (Chapagetti + Neoguri, 3rd place), Shin Ramyun Geonmyeon (6th place), and Shin Ramyun Bowl (8th place) also caught attention by making it into the rankings. Among the 11 products overall, four Nongshim brand products were the only Korean products to be ranked, proudly representing Korean ramen.
Chapaguri, made famous by the Oscar-winning film Parasite, was evaluated as having a balanced sweetness of black bean sauce and spicy seafood flavor. Shin Ramyun Geonmyeon was described as having air-dried noodles that are chewier and healthier compared to other products. The bowl-type Shin Ramyun Bowl sold in the U.S. was mentioned as Korea’s most popular Shin Ramyun cup noodle, convenient for microwave cooking, with thin noodles and a spicy broth that leave a strong impression.
