Yongsan-gu Held Untact Concert Celebrating Beethoven's 250th Birthday on June 16 at Yongsan Art Hall Grand Theater... Released on July 1 on District Office YouTube and Facebook
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yongsan-gu (District Mayor Seongjang Hyun) presented an untact (untact·non-face-to-face) performance commemorating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's (1770?1827) birth on July 1 through the district office's YouTube and Facebook channels.
This is part of the 2020 Resident Ensemble Development Support Project for performance venues, supported by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.
The actual performance was held on June 16 at the Yongsan Art Hall Grand Theater under the theme "Beethoven Comes to Yongsan." The Mostly Philharmonic Orchestra (hereinafter MPO) performed Beethoven's representative works such as the "Coriolan Overture," "Romance No. 1 and 2 for Violin and Orchestra," and "Symphony No. 5."
The Coriolan Overture is a piece Beethoven composed in early 1807, inspired by the eponymous play written by Austrian poet and playwright Heinrich Joseph von Collin. It is the most widely loved among the 11 overtures he left behind.
Beethoven's relatively early compositions, Romance No. 1 and 2, are performed with solo violin and orchestra together. With a gentle atmosphere and slow tempo, these beautiful works can be comfortably enjoyed by people of all ages.
Symphony No. 5 is Beethoven's representative work and is regarded as the epitome of classical music, known as the "Fate" Symphony. It was completed in 1808 and is praised for dramatically depicting human struggle, anguish, and the process of achievement toward ideals.
The MPO, responsible for the performance, was founded in 2003 as a pioneer in popularizing classical music. It has continued its fame through vigorous activities such as performing the complete Beethoven symphonies in 2012 and the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies in 2013.
Since 2015, the district has collaborated with MPO on cultural projects such as concerts and lectures, and in addition to this untact performance, it plans to continue concerts in the second half of the year including ▲ the 3DIVA concert with residents (September 15), ▲ Korean traditional fairy tales heard through symphonic poems (November 20), and ▲ A Day in Music with the Mostly Ensemble (December 3).
A district official stated, "Considering the COVID-19 situation, we plan to hold offline performances in the second half of the year, preferably with social distancing between seats."
The district will also operate the "Let's Play Instruments" program twice in September and October with MPO, visiting local schools to provide students with more vivid music education.
