Ulsan City was finally selected in the Ministry of Science and ICT (Korea Information Society Development Institute)'s '2020 Artificial Intelligence Learning Data Construction Project' competition.
This project supports the construction and opening of AI learning big data based on flight videos for the first time in Korea to foster the AI and drone industries. Ulsan City, in collaboration with the Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency, proposed the 'Drone Utilization Autonomous Flight Video Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Construction Project' and was selected.
Accordingly, Ulsan City and the Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency plan to form a consortium with Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) to promote AI technology development for small and venture companies, demonstrate commercialization of drone-utilized services, and create actual demand.
The total project cost is 2 billion KRW in national funds, and the project period is until December this year.
Through this project, Ulsan City will build over 300 hours of 4K flight video data using drones, 60 hours of Lidar video data, and develop AI commercial services.
For AI-based drone services, high-definition video data will be collected at three representative tourist sites: Taehwagang National Garden, Dong-gu Daewangam Park, and Yeongnam Alps. Services such as providing traffic and safety information around tourist sites and detection drone services for forest search and rescue will be established and demonstrated.
The data constructed through this project will be made publicly available to all citizens via AIHub, operated by the Korea Information Society Development Institute.
The city expects that this project will have a data construction effect worth 50 billion KRW that can be used for new businesses combining AI and drones, and create more than 50 youth jobs locally.
Ulsan City is also promoting the 'Drone Special Free Zone' contest project together with Ulju-gun to revitalize the drone industry.
Additionally, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) Environmental Monitoring Autonomous Unmanned System Research Center has started developing smart environmental monitoring technology based on autonomous unmanned systems, and next year plans to promote the 'Drone Demonstration City Construction Project' integrating urban crime prevention, maritime surveillance, and wildfire monitoring, as well as the 'Logistics Delivery Drone System Advancement Project.'
An official from Ulsan City said, "We plan to inject new vitality by combining AI, a core technology of the 4th Industrial Revolution, and drones, a new growth engine, with Ulsan's main industries such as shipbuilding and automobiles, as well as tourism resources and cultural contents."
