[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] An additional 6.15 billion euros (approximately 8.3 trillion KRW) have been raised internationally for the development and distribution of vaccines and treatments for the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
On the 27th (local time), the European Union (EU) Executive Commission, the EU's executive branch, announced the amount of additional fundraising at a virtual "Pledge Summit" held in cooperation with the non-governmental organization (NGO) "Global Citizen" for the international response to COVID-19. The amount announced by the EU Executive Commission included 4.9 billion euros (approximately 6.6 trillion KRW) pledged by the European Investment Bank (EIB).
With the continuation of additional funding pledges this time, the total pledged amount for vaccine and treatment development and distribution has reached 15.9 billion euros.
The meeting was attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, and leaders from various countries. The EU Executive Commission stated that 40 countries participated in this event, with many announcing support for organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO).
