[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "How to Approach Uphill Lies?"
'Uphill lie.'
The ball is positioned on an uphill slope toward the green. At address, the left foot is placed higher than the right foot (A lie in which your front foot is higher than your rear foot at address). Here, it is important to firmly stabilize the lower body. Slightly bend the left knee more to set up parallel to the slope. The shoulder line and both knee lines are parallel. More weight is placed on the right side. This makes the swing easier.
When standing perpendicular to the slope on an uphill lie, the natural motion is to sweep the club upward. There is no need to forcibly lift the ball. Just hit it as is. Imagine swinging only with the upper body without shifting your weight. The swing size is about three quarters compared to a full swing (A three quarter). Considering that a hook tends to occur, aim to the right of the target. Trying to lift the ball on an uphill lie often results in topping.
1. Keep your feet a normal width or slightly wider.
2. Take an open stance by slightly opening the left foot, and position the ball toward the high left foot.
3. Align your shoulders parallel to the slope on the uphill lie.
4. Because the face is tilted back due to the slope, increasing the loft, select a club that covers 10 to 20 yards more distance.
5. Uphill lies tend to hook, so aim slightly to the right of the target.
6. Do not shift your weight and make a three quarter swing with both arms.
A: Please show me how to hit a shot from an uphill lie.
B: All right. First, stand wider for extra stability. Second, take plenty of club to compensate for the extra height. Third, swing along the slope of the hill. Fourth, aim slightly to the right of the target.
A: Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.
