At the event held at the Grand Ballroom of the 63 Convention Center in Yeouido, Seoul, the ‘Inventor of the Year’ award received by Team Leader Kim is given to a single inventor who has made significant contributions to industrial development and national competitiveness through invention and scientific technology development, and is regarded as the highest honor for engineers.
Team Leader Kim was recognized for his leading participation from the early stages of developing the ‘world’s first rollable OLED TV’ and successfully creating the world’s first TV with a screen that rolls up.
During the development process of the LG Rollable OLED TV, ultra-thin glass manufacturing technology was applied, and from the design stage, various circuit components were integrated and miniaturized to facilitate the rollable implementation of the OLED substrate.
All components necessary for rolling the TV into a curve, such as thin-film encapsulation materials and back cover parts, were newly developed, securing a total of 54 patents and filing 33 overseas applications, contributing to the creation of intellectual property rights.
By using various domestically produced equipment, materials, and components, a localization rate of over 70% was achieved, which was highly evaluated for fostering domestic partner companies and creating employment.
Team Leader Kim expressed his award acceptance remarks, saying, "The rollable OLED TV will change the paradigm of displays and will be used in various forms across many fields."
Since joining LG in 1999, Team Leader Kim has devoted 21 years solely to developing new display technologies. In 2008, he was recognized for his contribution to the development of the ‘Slim & Narrow module technology,’ which minimized TV thickness and achieved design differentiation. In 2013, he developed the ‘side sealing technology’ that neatly finishes panel edges, opening the era of ‘Frameless TV,’ and received the LG Research Award for these achievements.
