Martial Arts, Announces 'Measures to Strengthen the Function of the Korea Liquor Association'
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The Korea International Trade Association (KITA) has begun actively strengthening the role and functions of the Korea Shippers' Council, a gathering of export-import shippers.
KITA operates the Korea Shippers' Council, the only legally recognized shipper organization in Korea, established in 1972 to protect the rights and interests of export-import shippers.
According to the measures announced by KITA, in addition to the existing 'Service and Logistics Development Committee' composed of representatives from member companies of the council, the 'Shippers' Working Committee' consisting of logistics practitioners from large and medium-sized enterprises, and the 'RADIS (RAte Discount & Consulting Service) Council' involving practitioners from international freight forwarders, new groups will be established: the 'SME Logistics Practitioners Meeting' for small and medium-sized enterprise logistics practitioners, and the 'Regional Shippers Logistics Council' for regional logistics practitioners. To enable the Shippers' Working Committee to actively respond to rising logistics costs, a 'Shippers' Representatives Meeting' involving executives from large and medium-sized enterprises will also be formed to operate in a two-track system alongside the working committee.
As the first step of these measures, the council launched the 'Busan Shippers Logistics Council' on the 24th at the Busan Lotte Hotel, with about 30 participants including 18 regional export shipper companies, 10 logistics companies, and 2 professors.
Following Busan, KITA plans to establish regional shippers logistics councils in Gwangju-Jeonnam, Incheon, and other areas in July. These councils will coordinate opinions between shippers and logistics companies to advance the regional logistics industry and serve as task forces (TF) to prevent escalation of logistics issues when they arise. Forums for proposing system improvements and sharing advanced logistics management know-how will also be held regularly.

Kim Kyung-yong, Director of the Logistics Service Office, said, "Through these measures, we have strengthened the industry representation of the Shippers' Council and enhanced its functions by establishing channels involving company executives. Through regional councils, we will actively communicate with local small and medium-sized shippers and logistics companies to contribute to reducing export-import logistics costs and responding to related issues."
