Jeonbuk Province Accelerates 'Commercial Vehicle Autonomous Platooning Test Base' Project
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Gominhyeong] Jeonbuk Province and Gunsan City announced on the 23rd that they will proceed with the project after being finally selected for the 'Saemangeum Region Commercial Vehicle Autonomous Driving Testbed Construction Project' hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
This project is known to be one that Jeonbuk Province has been promoting since 2017 to respond to domestic and international global technology trends and to create an environment for the future car industry ecosystem, thereby improving the automotive industry's structure.
Accordingly, the province, along with Gunsan City, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, and a consortium of four academic and research institutions, agreed to cooperate to make it a venue for the demonstration of commercial vehicle autonomous platooning in Korea.
This infrastructure will include approximately 10 km of straight road under the Saemangeum No. 4 seawall and an additional 1.5 km of curved road at the adjacent Myeongsuhwa site, enabling a total of 21 km?the longest in Korea?for high-speed autonomous platooning evaluation at 80 km/h during round-trip real-road driving.
Key features include providing various scenarios such as high-speed merging and splitting, lane departure, acceleration, obstacle recognition and avoidance, and cooperative platooning on roads using autonomous platooning components produced and supplied by companies, allowing for comprehensive testing.
Additionally, to evaluate autonomous driving system performance on various inflection sections, a complex curved road will be constructed to provide a curved road where step-by-step autonomous driving system evaluation is possible at high speeds.

Jeon Byeong-sun, Director of the Innovation Growth Industry Bureau of the province, said, “We consider it meaningful that the autonomous driving industry, a core of the Digital New Deal, will have a future car demonstration stage in Saemangeum.”
