The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 22nd that from March 1, 2021, Jwaseong Elementary School will be integrated into Beomil Elementary School. Jwaseong Elementary, established in 1953, will disappear after 67 years. Beomil Elementary, which opened three years later in 1956, will remain as the name of the merged school.
This integration was decided to guarantee students' right to learn, improve educational conditions, and strengthen educational competitiveness due to the sharp decline in the school-age population in Dong-gu, Busan.
The Southern Education Office has been promoting the school merger after consultations with related parties and parent meetings, as the number of students at Jwaseong Elementary dropped sharply by 72% over about ten years, from 204 in the 2010 academic year to 57 currently.
According to a parent survey conducted from the 15th to the 17th, with a 100% response rate, 77.2% approved, securing majority consent for the integration.
The Metropolitan Office of Education plans to actively support various educational activities such as field trips and after-school programs for Jwaseong Elementary students. The school site will be utilized for education-related facilities.
