Gyeonggi Council Elects Assemblyman Jang Hyun-guk as Candidate for Second Half Speaker

The Democratic Party of the Provincial Council held a general meeting of members on the 16th and selected Jang, a three-term member, as the candidate for the second half term chairman. Jang became the chairman candidate after a runoff vote against Kim Hyun-sam (Ansan 7, three-term).
For the vice-chairman candidates, three-term Moon Kyung-hee (Namyangju 2) and two-term Jin Yong-bok (Yongin 3) were selected.
The chairman and vice-chairman of the Provincial Council, which belong to the majority party, will be finally elected by a vote of all members at the plenary session of the extraordinary meeting on the 7th of next month.
In his acceptance speech as chairman candidate, Jang emphasized, "I will reflect on whether the council was democratic and served the residents," and added, "Among the various pledges I made, the most tangible one for us is the complete revision of the Local Autonomy Act, and I will take the lead in its revision."
Park Geun-cheol (Uiwang 1), a two-term member, was elected as the representative member of the negotiating group, the Democratic Party, defeating Min Kyung-sun (Goyang 4).
Newly appointed Representative Park promised, "I will strive to communicate and move forward together with 13.6 million residents of Gyeonggi Province and 132 Democratic Party members of the Provincial Council."

The total number of members of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council (141 members) consists of 132 from the Democratic Party, 5 from the United Future Party, 2 from the Justice Party, 1 from the Minsheng Party, and 1 independent, with the Democratic Party being the only negotiating group.
