UN Secretary-General Guterres Sends Letter to President Moon Jae-in... "Korea's Public Health Response a Model for Other Countries"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] The Blue House announced that UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres sent a letter to President Moon Jae-in expressing his welcome for South Korea's 'Green New Deal.'
Yoon Jae-kwan, deputy spokesperson of the Blue House, stated on the 16th, "UN Secretary-General Guterres sent letters to President Moon Jae-in on April 30 and June 2," adding, "He expressed strong support for South Korea's ambitious Green New Deal aimed at recovering from COVID-19 and making the economy cleaner and more environmentally friendly."
Secretary-General Guterres emphasized, "Spending to stimulate the economy must go hand in hand with climate action," and added, "Humanity has prospered when turning crises into opportunities." Earlier, in his letter dated April 30, Guterres also stated, "Overcoming the COVID-19 crisis must be accompanied by climate action, and I look forward to South Korea's regional and global leadership in the field of climate change."
Furthermore, Secretary-General Guterres said, "South Korea's strong public health response based on extensive early diagnosis and contact tracing has become a model for other countries," and expressed gratitude for "the President's leadership in demonstrating the importance of international solidarity to the world."
Meanwhile, through an op-ed in The New York Times (April 28) and a press briefing (April 30), Secretary-General Guterres evaluated South Korea as an exemplary case in responding excellently to COVID-19 and climate change.
