Fox News Black Female Anchor Who Made Trump Sweat
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Donald Trump broke a sweat during a press conference with Fox News, the channel he enjoys watching and giving interviews to.
On the 12th (local time), President Trump announced on his Twitter that he would be appearing in an interview recorded the previous afternoon in Dallas, Texas, with Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner, and encouraged his supporters to watch. Faulkner is a Black anchor but hosts news on the conservative-leaning Fox News.
During the interview, she said, "I am a Black woman and a mother," and mentioned, "You have been talking about (the George Floyd death incident) continuously, but I have not seen you offer any consolation in this case," before asking a decisive question. She asked, "Why did you say this?" referring to Trump's tweet, "When the looting starts, the shooting starts."
Trump's tweet, posted in the early hours of the 29th of last month, sparked major controversy by encouraging violent suppression. Since then, President Trump has repeatedly emphasized a tough crackdown policy, including suggesting the deployment of the military to suppress protests.
As the backlash grew, President Trump clarified that it was not a threat to protesters but a reference to shootings that had occurred at protest sites.
In response to Faulkner's question, President Trump said, "That's a phrase I've heard for years." Faulkner then pressed further, asking, "Do you know where it came from?"
Trump, appearing flustered and hesitating briefly, replied, "I think Philadelphia. The mayor of Philadelphia." Faulkner countered, "No, it came out in 1967," and explained that it was a phrase used by Police Chief Hendley.
Regarding this interview, The Washington Post reported that the Fox News anchor educated Trump about the violent origins of the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts." The Washington Post, a media outlet critical of President Trump, welcomed this unusual move by Fox News, which is generally favorable to Trump.
