Lee Hae-chan on Yoon Mi-hyang Controversy: "We Must Not Succumb to Personal Attacks and Baseless Allegations"
[Asia Economy Reporters Kang Nahum and Jeon Jinyoung] Lee Hae-chan, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 27th regarding Yoon Mee-hyang, the elected representative, and various allegations and controversies related to the Justice and Memory Foundation (Jeonguiyeondae), "The testimonies of victims during the Japanese colonial period and over 30 years of activities cannot be subject to political strife, malicious defamation, or partisan exploitation." This is the first time Lee has commented on the Jeonguiyeondae controversy.
At the Supreme Council meeting held at The-K Hotel in Seoul that day, Lee said, "There may have been mistakes and shortcomings during the 30 years of activism. There might have been careless points, and there can be various opinions about the methods and merits of the movement."
Lee pointed out the distorted reporting by Japanese media related to this incident, emphasizing, "If there are mistakes, they should be corrected, and those responsible must be held accountable. However, this must be based on facts. We must not succumb to suspicion-raising tactics that invade personal privacy."
He also said, "Looking at the recent series of events, there are many parts that are difficult to accept logically. Especially, it is true that reports are coming out about trivial matters unrelated to the essence. This kind of approach cannot lead to the development of a mature democracy. I believe self-reflection is needed in all sectors to leap forward to a more mature democratic society once again."
Lee added, "I urge the relevant authorities to verify the facts as quickly as possible, and I ask the public to observe carefully and make judgments prudently."
