[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The 76th United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) General Assembly was held on the 21st via video conference under the theme "Enhancing Cooperation in the Marine Sector for Sustainable Development," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
UN ESCAP is one of the five regional commissions of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is the largest intergovernmental organization in the Asia-Pacific region, consisting of 62 member countries, playing a central role in economic and social cooperation in the region.
At this General Assembly, a resolution titled "Strengthening Cooperation for the Promotion of Sustainable Use of Marine and Marine Resources for Sustainable Development in the Asia-Pacific Region," co-proposed by South Korea, was adopted, reaffirming the member states' commitment to enhancing regional cooperation for the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. The Korean government introduced policies for sustainable marine development, including efforts to eradicate Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing and initiatives to reduce marine plastic waste.
Meanwhile, regional cooperation discussions addressing the socio-economic impacts of the global health crisis were conducted at this General Assembly. As a result, a COVID-19 response resolution was adopted, expressing international solidarity to promote a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable economic and social system for better recovery than before.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "The government emphasized the necessity of international cooperation in responding to COVID-19, actively sharing the K-quarantine model with the international community, and explained that efforts will continue to meet global demands, including requests for medical supplies support."
