Establishment of Fire-Resistant Forest Zone to Protect Anmyeon Pine Trees in Chungnam
[Asia Economy (Naepo) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Chungnam Provincial Forest Resources Research Institute is creating a fire-resistant forest belt to protect the Anmyeon Pine.
According to the Provincial Forest Resources Research Institute on the 13th, the Anmyeon Pine is located around the forest genetic resource protection forest in Anmyeondo, Taean-gun, Chungnam. The genetic resource protection forest within Anmyeondo Natural Recreation Forest is a natural forest of Anmyeon Pine characterized by its unusually red and hard trunks and strong fragrance.
The fire-resistant forest belt will be established near Seungeon-ri and Jungjang-ri roadsides and around the arboretum adjacent to Anmyeondo Natural Recreation Forest, covering a total area of 6 hectares with a width of 20 meters and a length of 3 kilometers. This is to protect the economic and public value of Anmyeon Pine, a major forest resource of the province, and to prevent fires from spreading into large wildfires.
The fire-resistant trees to be planted include approximately 16,000 trees of Camellia and Gordonia, evergreen broadleaf species with excellent fire resistance that can inhabit the Anmyeon area.
The Provincial Forest Resources Research Institute plans to complete the construction by the end of this month and establish a wildfire spread prevention model through monitoring until 2023, thereby building a large-scale wildfire defense barrier.
Additionally, test plots of perennial herbaceous plants such as Liriope, Lycoris radiata, and Petasites will be created to conduct experimental research on their effectiveness in preventing surface fire spread.
