South Korea Ranks 9th in Nature Index for 'Natural Science Research Output'... Same Ranking as Last Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] South Korea's natural science research performance was ranked 9th in the world.
According to the 'Nature Index 2020 Edition' by the globally prestigious scientific journal Nature, as of 2019, South Korea's natural science research performance indicator, the 'Nature Index Score' (WFC), was 1435.23. This ranked 9th worldwide, the same position as the previous year in the national rankings.
The United States (20152.48) and China (13566.11) took 1st and 2nd place respectively, while Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Canada, and Switzerland ranked higher than South Korea.
The 'Nature Index Score' is an indicator that converts research performance into numerical values by analyzing the number of papers published annually in 82 major natural science journals, authorship contributions, and weighted factors by academic field.
In the ranking by research institutions, Seoul National University ranked 66th, the highest among domestic universities and research institutes.

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) ranked 79th, making it one of the only two institutions alongside Seoul National University to be listed among the top 100 institutions.
