Seongbuk-gu Receives Minister of Health and Welfare Commendation for Promoting Child-Friendly Environment
Achieving Recognition as a Leading Local Government Nationwide for Operating Child-Friendly Policies
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) was selected as a meritorious institution for the activation of a child-friendly environment and received the Minister of Health and Welfare Commendation at the 98th Children's Day Awards in 2020, hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
To commemorate the 98th Children's Day in 2020, the Ministry of Health and Welfare selected and awarded meritorious persons from 243 local governments nationwide who contributed to the protection, safety, and rights of children and the promotion of welfare, aiming to create and spread a social atmosphere where children are respected as subjects of rights and supported for healthy growth.
Seongbuk-gu was the first local government in the country to obtain UNICEF Child-Friendly City certification. Entering the 7th term of the elected government, it has pursued leading policies to realize a higher level of Seongbuk-type child-friendly city by aiming to be △ a city where children and adolescents live well △ a happy city where the rights to rest and play for children and adolescents are guaranteed △ a city supporting education and career paths for children and adolescents, earning recognition for having the most outstanding child-friendly policies among Seoul’s autonomous districts.
In particular, Seongbuk-gu has been praised for advancing the establishment of the 'Seongbuk-type Child-Friendly City' by achieving various innovative results such as expanding children's participation rights through operating child and youth participation organizations like the Children's Council, Youth Council, and Youth District Participation Group; guaranteeing the right to play for children and adolescents by operating youth cultural centers and play spaces for children and adolescents; and supporting career education tailored to the educational stages of elementary, middle, and high schools.
