US Media Focuses on COVID-19 Resurgence Originating from Itaewon
WSJ Introduces Infection Situation as Main Article
Focus on Possibility of Infection Resurgence
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] American media are also paying attention to the resurgence of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in South Korea originating from Itaewon clubs. As the U.S. is seeking to resume economic activities, it is closely observing how South Korea, which had entered a lull in COVID-19 infections, experienced a spread of infections after transitioning to everyday quarantine measures.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 10th (local time) classified and introduced a Seoul-based article about the spread of COVID-19 outbreaks in South Korea as a major news item on its homepage, accompanied by photos.
WSJ focused on the fact that after South Korea successfully suppressed the coronavirus, a cluster infection occurred centered on those who visited Itaewon clubs in Seoul. WSJ pointed out that South Korea saw the largest increase in new infections in a month and reported that although the Korean government switched to everyday quarantine, this case showed how difficult it is to return to normal life.
WSJ also highlighted President Moon Jae-in’s remarks in his third anniversary address expressing concern that a second wave of COVID-19 infections could occur at any time. WSJ quoted Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon saying, "Complacency can lead to an explosion of infections. The efforts of citizens and medical staff can be undone in an instant."
Many U.S. media outlets, including CNN, quickly reported that Mayor Park issued a gathering ban order to halt the operation of entertainment establishments in response to the cluster infection spread among Itaewon club visitors.

WSJ also introduced domestic reactions in South Korea related to the Itaewon club infection spread. It was judged that the club visited by confirmed cases was a gay club, and because of this, most visitors provided inaccurate contact information, making tracing difficult. The New York Times (NYT) also reported that same-sex marriage is not legal in South Korea and that there are many negative views toward sexual minorities.
