This represents a 3.4% decrease in production volume compared to the previous year, but a 17.5% increase in production value.
The seaweed farming area in Haenam-gun covers 9,611 hectares with about 125,000 rafts installed. Since the first sale of 2020 seaweed began in October last year, sales concluded at the end of last month.
This year's sales performance saw a slight decrease in production volume due to overlapping difficulties such as damage to seedling facilities and poor crop conditions caused by Typhoon Mitag in October last year, red rot disease caused by high water temperatures, and the occurrence of seaweed epiphytes (commonly called Borateol).
On the other hand, steady farm management by fishermen helped recover seaweed production in the latter half of the year, and with the rise in seaweed prices, the sales amount increased significantly compared to 66.5 billion KRW last year.
With the conclusion of the 2020 seaweed sales, Haenam-gun is guiding the early removal of seaweed farming facilities in the production areas where production has ended.
Additionally, Haenam-gun is actively promoting support projects for high-quality seaweed farming, including a budget of 3.7 billion KRW for 13 projects such as eco-friendly seaweed farming equipment, ensuring no disruptions in next year's seaweed production.
In particular, the seaweed land-based seedling support project, which can prevent early-stage seaweed diseases and control marine pests without being affected by sea conditions, will continue to expand. Through this, the land-based seedling ratio, currently about 11%, is planned to increase to 30% of the facility volume this year.
