Moon's National Approval Rating in the 60% Range for 3 Consecutive Weeks... Ruling Party's Support Declines [Realmeter]
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] President Moon Jae-in's approval rating for his national administration has remained in the 60% range for three consecutive weeks. The ruling party, the Democratic Party of Korea, showed a declining trend in support.
According to Realmeter, which conducted a public opinion survey commissioned by tbs on the 4th and 6th of this month, the positive evaluation of President Moon's administration rose by 0.8 percentage points compared to the previous week's aggregate, reaching 61.4%, announced on the 7th. Negative evaluations dropped by 3.0 percentage points to 32.4%.
The gap between positive and negative evaluations stands at 29.0 percentage points, which is outside the margin of error. Positive evaluations have been higher than negative evaluations outside the margin of error for seven consecutive weeks.
By region, support significantly increased in Daegu·Gyeongbuk (51.3%→63.4%) and also rose in Gwangju·Jeolla (72.7%→78.0%). By party support, increases were seen among Justice Party supporters (65.5%→82.6%), United Future Party supporters (12.9%→18.3%), People’s Party supporters (33.8%→37.7%), and Open Democratic Party supporters (85.9%→89.7%). By ideological inclination, the centrist group (59.4%→62.5%) showed an increase.
Realmeter analyzed the rise in approval ratings as being influenced by the positive evaluation of the response to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) situation and the visibility of emergency disaster relief payments.
In party support ratings, the Democratic Party of Korea fell by 2.6 percentage points from the previous week to 42.6%. The controversy over Lee Nak-yeon, the Democratic Party’s COVID-19 National Crisis Response Committee Chair, visiting the fire site in Icheon appears to have affected the decline in support.
The United Future Party also dropped by 1.7 percentage points to 26.3%, marking its lowest point since its founding. Weakness among conservatives (down 8.0 percentage points), women (down 6.3 percentage points), housewives (down 5.5 percentage points), and labor workers (down 5.0 percentage points) led the overall decline in support.
