30s Mother Given Suspended Sentence for Neglecting 18-Day-Old Daughter While Drunk, Leading to Death
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] A woman in her 30s who left her 18-day-old daughter unattended while intoxicated, resulting in the child's death, was sentenced to probation.
The Jeju District Court Criminal Division 2 (Judge Lee Jang-wook) announced on the 6th that Kim Mo (36), who was tried on charges of negligent homicide, was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year probation period.
The court stated, "Kim left her daughter, who was less than a month old, unattended and drank alcohol during the daytime beside her. She fell asleep intoxicated, which led to the victim's death, making the degree of negligence serious." However, the court also considered "that this case was caused by negligence, Kim's deep remorse for her wrongdoing, the fact that she has a three-year-old child to raise, and that Kim's husband pleaded for leniency," explaining the reasons for the sentencing.
Kim was brought to trial on charges of causing the death of her 18-day-old daughter by feeding her formula milk and leaving her on a blanket without burping her at their home in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo City, at around 11:10 a.m. on June 20 last year.
